ASUS EEE 1000he unveiled

February 2, 2009

ASUS has announced the tenth netbook in its EEE line. The ASUS 1000he has a number of marked differences with previous models in the line.

For example, the 1000he is the first EEE model to sport the new Atom N280 processor from Intel. The new processor has some differences compared to the Atom N270 processor — probably the most used processor in netbooks across all brands.

The Atom N280 is a bit more powerful than its predecessor with a speed of 1.66Ghz and a 667Mhz frontside bus. The old N270 had 1.6Ghz and a 533Mhz bus. The new EEE model also sports Intels new GN40 integrated graphics. The netbook will weight 3.2 pounds and will have a 10 inch LED backlit LCD screen.

The 1000he will also have the new chiclet style keyboard that will have a repositioned shift key. The keyboard is 92 percent full sized. Aesthetically, certain areas of the palm rest and LCD bezel will now have a glossy finish.

The 1000he can run Windows XP Home. It has a 169Gb HD, and 1Gb of DDR2 ram.

Portions of the palm rest and LCD bezel that were matte in previous models are now glossy. The batter life is pegged at 9.5 hours and will also have 802.11n and bluetooth wireless.

Available in blue or black, the 1000he will be pricedat $399, significantly less than the recent models of the EEE PCs.

N. American retailers accepting EEE PC 900 preorders

May 6, 2008

Laptop users in North America are quite lucky. ASUS has confirmed that major retailers across the country are now accepting preorders for its forthcoming second generation ASUS EEE, the PC 900. The product will officially be sold on May 12 and users can have a choice of getting a Linux or Windows XP “variants”. The new price point for these babies are at $549, although those who will get Windows will have to contend with a smaller hard drive because of the higher cost of getting a Windows user license.

For those who haven’t yet read any of the references to the EEE PC 900 in this blog, the new unit will have a largers 8.9 inch screen and 1 gigabyte of memory.

A friend’s impressions on the Asus EEE

January 14, 2008

A friend of mine finally bought the Asus EEE ultraportable notebook, the gizmo that I’ve been dying to get since last year.

Getting second hand information on a laptop that is on my wishlist can be frustrating, especially since I just helped another friend acquire her Macbook Pro a week ago. But curiosity can still be a good cure to technological envy so I went ahead and asked my friend what he thought of his new lappy.

What I got was mostly praises. The Asus EEE was very fast, very efficient in loading programs and, surprisingly, did not have any issues with Windows XP. My friend decided to remove the Xandros Linux OS that came with the EEE because, as my friend put it, he is too chicken to try out Linux.

His only complaint were the tiny keys, which will really be an issue with touch typists who have big fingers. I fall in this category so I’m eager to find out if it would really affect productivity.

ASUS EEE ships

November 1, 2007

I’ve written about Asus’ amazing EEE series of affordable subnotebooks before. It was one of the most hotly anticipated gadgets this summer but a series of setbacks meant delays in shipping the units to stores.

Well, finally the ASUS EEE is going to see the light of day, with units being distributed to retailers as we speak. The prices of the EEE will range from $299 to $399, with colors ranging from the usual black and white to funkier blue and pink colors. Initial batches of the EEE will run on Linux but ASUS revealed that a Windows version will become available by the end of this year.

According to ASUS managers, students are the primary target for the product but they are also going to target full time moms who may not require a laptop with all the bells and whistles since their primary purpose for these units is to go online to do email and search for recipes.

The MSI Air keyboard is perfect for your nettop

February 9, 2010

I’ve always been intrigued with wireless keyboards for some reason. I can’t really put my finger on it, but the prospect of lying around the house, keyboard in tow, while watching stuff on a huge HDTV is probably part of the appeal.

Oh wait, it’s not just part of the appeal, it has everything to do with it.

Anyway, if you’re using a nettop or any other computer as a media center, the MSI Air keyboard is probably for you.

From EeePC.net:

It has a keyboard where you can enter words for search boxes and has the full complement of media keys and directional pad for controlling menus. It even has hot keys for search. What’s more, it can use motion detection so you can use it as a mouse.

The RF based device needs a USB dongle to work and weighs 0.2kg. No word on how long the battery will last but it does use 2 replaceable AA batteries and goes to standby after inactivity.

So I’m pretty much sold on this except for the AA batteries. Those things aren’t exactly known for their longevity. But then I think the MSI Air Keyboard is worth giving a try, though.

Oh, yeah, one caveat: it’s available in Germany for now- no, wait, in March. So if you do find one next month, be willing to fork over €79 (US$108) for the MSI Air Keyboard. It works for Windows and Mac OS X, by the way, so I’m sure you’re thinking that it’s worth it.
