Buying a Macbook Pro… for someone

August 28, 2023

Originally posted on January 7, 2008 @ 11:43 pm

So I’m off to buy a new Apple Macbook Pro tomorrow. Unfortunately, it’s not going to be for me. I’m going to accompany a good friend of mine and be her “knight in digital armor” as I do all of the necessary shopping, haggling (for freebies) and give her my opinions as to which laptop to get. We’ve already gone window shopping today and we’ve already narrowed down our choices.

I love being the “go to” guy for my girl friends when it comes to all matters technical. I love shopping around for gadgets so these trips are really not a chore for me but an opportunity to see what’s available at stores and test them on my own. I also feel much more “masculine”. I guess I have to say this is like the “handyman” syndrome where guys feel more butch when women rely on them to fix broken light bulbs or busted drawers.

There is some bitter to the sweet though. Take for example the trip tomorrow. My friend is going to get the top of the line Macbook Pro, which is a unit that is WAAAAY over my budget. Technological envy rears its ugly head sometimes when you go to a store where someone else buys the laptop you love.

iPod Touch, new iPod versions revealed

August 28, 2023

Talk about true portability and for sure you any group of people will not only talk about their notebook computers but also their iPods. The Apple iPod has defined gadget portability for the last few years. It has become an iconic totem of the portability revolution. Apple does realize the importance of the iPod to consumers all over the world and has taken great pains to make it constantly fresh and current by releasing updates almost every year.

This year is no exception either. In a recent press conference Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced the iPod touch, the newest generation iPod in the market. The iPod Touch is basically a stripped down version of the company’s bestseller iPhone. It can play music, videos and photos and even has WiFi capabilities. Lest you think that the era of the physical clickwheel has just passed us by, Jobs said that the iPod Touch is actually an addition to the iPod lineup. All of the other product lines in the iPod family will remain although these will have significant changes. For example, the Shuffle will now come in more colors, and the Nano will have a slimmer build and a new interface. The same goes for the iPod Video, which is now called the iPod Classic, which will also sport the new interface, as well as a beefier capacity and battery life.

Christmas just got a whole lot messier.

Computers and depreciation

August 28, 2023

I recently visited the buy and sell section of one of my favorite online forums. I periodically do this because I have discovered that some really great bargains could be had from the buy and sell section. I was doing the virtual equivalent of window shopping when I chanced upon an ad posted by one of the forum members. This guy was selling his old iMac G4 20″ desktop PC for about $1,199. I couldn’t believe my eyes! The ad further explained that the G4 had been used for a fe w years and that he initially bought the iMac for $2,800.

If you look at the numbers you’d think that you’re getting a real bargain. The guy must be crazy if he’s selling it at that low price! The seller may think that he’s offering a great bargain price, but in reality, he’s ripping off any prospective buyers. Here is where the iniquity of depreciation kicks in. A cursory look in eBay and you will discover that the highest bid for a used but good condition iMac G4 is $200. Yes, a measly 200 bucks. And to put it in a better perspective, the newly released iMac Aluminum, that marvel of desktop architecture, has a base price of, hold on, $1,199. That’s the price being offered by the seller in that buy and sell section!

Depreciation really sucks especially when it involves items that you paid so much money for. The seller may not have any intention of tricking hapless buyers and only wants to recoup some of his investment on a PC. But the sad reality is, the moment you buy a computer, whether it’s a desktop PC or a laptop, it is already obsolete and have devalued in price.

If you have any intention of recouping your investment in computers. Follow this simple advice: Sell it off after two years. Even then, the most that you can get is maybe half of what you paid for it.

Laptop mods are for the brave and the bold

August 28, 2023

I’ve always been fascinated with modifications made on desktops and laptops. I’ve seen features on how to modify desktops and the inherent benefits of making these changes. I got so intrigued that I actually modded the case of my first PC. I think I was one of the first people to do it where I live because when I brought my PC for repairs all of the technicians and customers milled around my PC, asking questions about the simple intake vent that I painstakingly cut from the side panel of the case.

Now, PC mods are quite common. Vents would never even get a second glance from people because PC case manufacturers now incorporate these on cases. What is making people take notice though are modifications made on laptops.

People who modify laptops are a different breed altogether. These are people with nerves of carbon fiber and balls of steel. Why? It takes a man of courage to actually open a very expensive piece of electronics and then tinker and change something that was not even specified by the manufacturer.

Take this guy, for example. He modified his Apple laptop so that the Apple logo would glow. The modification was a success and the result was quite impressive.

I’m now looking at my trusty Acer notebook in a whole new perspective.

iPod plays FLAC? Yes, if you’ve got Rockbox

August 28, 2023

Originally posted on July 28, 2007 @ 10:52 pm

One of the biggest shortcomings of the Apple iPod is the fact that it only supports a very limited number of audio formats, namely, AAC, MP3 and WAV. That’s a paltry three formats when other competing music players can support more than five formats. I have nothing against the AAC format that Apple developed. But I am really just much more comfortable with the other audio formats that I personally think sound much better. For example, I think that the FLAC lossless format is far superior to the Apple Lossless format. the logical solution would be to just get these competing players but I Apple’s good customer support and the iPod’s better resale value is something that I just cannot ignore.

What I have done instead is to install Rockbox on my 5G iPod. The Rockbox is basically an operating system replacement to the  existing OS installed in various music players. The plug-in architecture of Rockbox means various features can  be added to further enhance the capabilities of these players.

I’ll write about the other great features of Rockbox at some future time. Right now I am quite happy that with this firmware/OS replacement I can now load my favorite FLAC files on my iPod. These files have now been freed from my laptop. Even OGG files can now play in my machine. Nothing gives a smile to your face than to hear your favorite songs in lossless fidelity. My Tom Waits collection appreciates the upgrade.
