That said, I’ve never really gotten into Mobile Internet Devices, or MIDs. I honestly don’t see the need to open up a phone-sized device running full Windows XP to do the same tasks I can easily do on my phone (or iPod touch for some people).

However, checking out the video below can actually explain the appeal of MIDs to some people. I’m actually interested to try out MIDs in the near future, but I’ll stick to my phone and netbook for the time being.

The Magellan computer began deployment last month in Portugal’s schools. The objective is to distribute a total of 500,000 laptops that cost only 50 euros to school children, their homes and eventually even export it to Africa and Latin America.

Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO, officially introduced the Suite Magellan that will be bundled with the laptops. The package includes Windows XP and Home, a number of development applications, as well as free email and messaging functions.

ASUS has announced that it will be adding HSUPA 3.75G technology to the Eee line beginning October. The first product that will get the new tech is the Eee PC 901. Although no price was announced for this new iteration, the 901 will be available in both black and white. There were also no announcements whether the 901 will be partnered with any wireless supplier.

The 901′s specifications include an 8.9 inch display, Intel Atom processor, 1gb of memory, 802.11/b/g/n, bluetooth and Windows XP Home. The 901 will have a 16Gb SSD as well as 20gb of free online storage.

The X110 Momo has specs that are very identical to products already available in the market — 1.6Ghz Atom processor, Windows Home Basic, 1.3 megapixel webcam, bluetoot and SD card reader. It will also sport a 10-inch screen. Available colors are black, silver and pink.

LG has yet to announce when it will be released but it will most probably be unveiled before the year ends.

The Dell UMPC, otherwise called the Inspiron Mini, will have a 16gb SSD and an Intel integrated video solution that can be bumped up to 8mh of shared memory. This will result in a resolution of 1024 x 600 over an 8.9″ screen. The PC will also have a 1.3 megapixel web camera.

The Inspiron Mini will offer both Linux and Windows XP version. Finally, it will also have a 512mb RAM that can be upgraded up to 1GB, and an Intel Atom processor that runs at 1.6Ghz.

No price points have been announced yet though.

The company has introduced the Ideapad S10, a UMPC that has a 10-inch screen and a keyboard that’s sized 85 percent of the full size. The company is also planning on releasing a nine-inch version in other countries. The 2.4 pound device will have an Intel Atom 1.6Ghz processor and up to 2GB of memmory, it will have two USB ports, a 4-in-1 card reader, webcam and Expresscard slot. Users can choose between an 80gb or 160gb HD and a 3 or 6 cell battery.

Expect to pay $399 or $499 for the WinXP edition. Other countries can expect to see Linux versions as well.
