Technology is getting more and more prevalent that it has become firmly entrenched in our daily lives. Just take a cursory look at what’s around you and you will immediately notice how ubiquitous technology has become over the last few years. Practically everyone has a mobile phone (even children have them!) that can take pictures, surf the internet and retrieve email and we haven’t touched on video calls that, a decade ago, only existed in the realm of science fiction. People who go in cafes don’t bring newspapers or books anymore. They have their laptops, portable netbooks or their ebook readers. Access to the internet is available practically anywhere thanks to WiFi, which brings a whole new level of meaning to the word “connected.” There’s no stopping the relentless march of technology that all we can do is brace ourselves to what the future will bring.

But even though technological advancements are happening all over the world there are some cities that can be considered as ahead of the curve in terms of technological acceptance and immersion. These are the cities that have made technology one of the building blocks of its growth both economically and culturally. These cities have incorporated technology to such a degree that it is beginning to define itself in terms of how it has melded itself to the digital age.

Seoul

The South Korean capital is probably the most technologically integrated in the world. Seoul boasts of having one of the fastest commercially available broadband speeds on the planet. And the level of immersion in households is also among the highest – with four of five households getting broadband internet of up to 100Mbps for just $40 a month. Even mobile communications is tops in Seoul with nine out of ten people owning mobile phones. Leading technological advancements are also being developed and released in Seoul mainly because Samsung and LG, two of the top consumer electronics makers in the world, are headquartered there. This means Koreans are probably getting these advanced technologies first.

Seoul is also leading the world in terms of convergence. It is the first city to fully explore digital mobile TV broadcasting. This technology was launched way back in 2005 and at present more than two million Koreans are now subscribed to the service – watching TV on their phones at practically any place they want.

Seoul is a great city to visit, there are many Seoul hotels to choose from – from economy to luxury hotels.

Tokyo

If technology is the subject, Tokyo is probably the first city that any person will think of first. And for good reason. Tokyo is one of the most advanced cities in the world and probably the first truly technology driven city way before these new technologies were developed. Even before the advent of the internet, Tokyo has gained a worldwide reputation for being the source of new technologies. It is often said that if you want to find out hat kind of technology will be popular in a few years, go to Tokyo and look at what the people there are using and what the stores are selling.

It will be interesting to note that the current 3G mobile technology that the rest of the world is enjoying for the last couple of years has been used in Japan during the early years of the decade. Japan turned the phone into a real multimedia convergence device that can practically do anything. The fact that you can buy from vending machines using mobile phones is just the kind of ubiquitous application of technology that not many countries have done.

Technological advancements in Tokyo is also helped by the number of leading electronics manufacturers based in Tokyo and in other parts of Japan. It’s the reason they get a taste of the first deliveries of gaming consoles, mobile phones, electronics equipment and even down to the mundane everyday items that you wouldn’t even give second thoughts to – for example, electronic toilet bowls that warm the seat and give a gentle stream of water to wash your bottom. Only in Japan, indeed.

Technology is also well integrated when you visit Tokyo and stay in any one of the hotels in the city. A Tokyo hotel will usually have a number of high tech facilities.

Stockholm

The European city of Stockholm in Sweden has also distinguished itself as a technological city. The impact of technology in Sweden in general and Stockholm in particular has resulted in a big shift in educational priorities in Sweden’s youth. A significant majority of kids in Sweden now want to become engineers instead of doctors or lawyers. Science and technology has firmly taken hold of the whole country.

Sweden is one of the top countries in Europe in terms of broadband speed and penetration. And this has significantly impacted on the way technology is new being used in the city. For example, convergence efforts has now resulted in a unique application of broadband speeds, the internet, mobile telephony and e-commerce. Shoppers can now buy groceries using their mobile phones. Each item in the grocery has an RFID tag. A shopper will just have to scan all of the tags in his shopping cart and after this is done a unique ID number is given. The shopper will only need to SMS the ID number to a phone number and the groceries are automatically charged to the phone bill.

Stockholm officials are hard at work in making Stockholm one of the leading ICT capitals in the European region. And they are succeeding in that task. A growing number of IT companies are now holding office in the city and the list is growing. Government officials are hard at work in ensuring the necessary infrastructure is in place to make the city more attractive for tech companies.

Stockholm is a great place to visit since it is a great jump off point when visiting the rest of Scandinavia. There are a number of great hotels in Stockholm that you can stay in.

Tallinn

Among the cities in the world that is slowly making its presence felt as a technological capital is the city of Tallinn in Estonia. Tallinn’s proximity to other progressive cities in Scandinavia has benefitted in tremendously in establishing its IT roots. In fact, Tallinn boasts of being one of the most wired cities in the region. The Tallinn residents are quite pampered in terms of connectivity since practically every place – whether it be the park, bars, pubs or hotels – have free WiFi. In fact, it is quite common to see road signs that indicate the nearest free WiFi hotspots in the area.

Tallinn has also earned the distinction as being the first city in the world to hold elections online. Voters merely swiped their smartcard on a card reader attached to their computer and then voted securely on a website. The same smartcard also allows residents to view any data the government may have on them. Taxes in Tallinn are now paid in the same way and because the whole system is linked to banks and other public institutions, any deductible amounts are automatically made.

Tallinn is already being marketed as a Silicon Valley of the Scandinavian region. And it is gaining a lot of success and recognition for its efforts. In fact, Skype is one of the most successful start-ups to originate in Tallinn.

Tallinn hotels are quite numerous and because of the city’s initiatives practically all of them have free WiFi.

Songdong City

If you are on the lookout for a true, built-from-the-ground-up technology city then all you need to remember is Songdong City. This new city is being developed 60 kilometers from Seoul on a vast 600 hectares of land reclaimed from the sea. If we’re talking about technologically advanced Songdong may just take the cake. It is the first city that will have its residential, medical and business sectors linked.

The key to everything would be a smartcard. The smartcard will be used as a housekey but can also be used in accessing the subway, paying for parking, buying movie tickets or even borrowing free public bicycles. The whole city will be pollution-free because conventional gas powered cars will not be allowed inside. Instead, visitors and residents will use the aforementioned bicycles and also electric smart cars and public transports. Over 10,000 such cars will be plying the routes of the city.

Fixed line fiber optics will be wired into all homes as well as high speed wireless in all other areas of Songdong. In one of the more inspired aspects of the city, the government’s IT infrastructure will be tied to the home networks of residents, which means residents can have access to their files wherever they are. These files can be accessed through their computers, mobile phones and other portable devices. It can also be accessed through government provided city kiosks and public screens. Even the garbage will be electronically advanced in Songdong. Sensors in garbage can will automatically alert garbage collection teams to empty the trash, while RFID can be used to credit residents if they help in recycling efforts.

With Songdong due to be completed in 2010, the future is truly just around the corner. You can already check on the progress of Songdong when you visit Seoul since it is just a short drive away. You can stay in one of the many hotels in Seoul that will fit your budget and needs.

I was quite surprised when I read this bit of news today.

The state government of Illinois has recently declared that Pluto is a planet. The resolution was a way to sidestep the recent ruling of the International Astronomical Union that reclassified Pluto as a part of the Kuiper belt, removing it from the list of planets.

The specific decree reads as “RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that as Pluto passes overhead through Illinois’ night skies, that it be reestablished with full planetary status, and that March 13, 2009 be declared ‘Pluto Day’ in the State of Illinois in honor of the date its discovery was announced in 1930.”

A big reason Illinois is desperately fighting for Pluto’s “planetary” status is because the man who discovered Pluto in 1930, Clyde Tombaugh, is an Illinois native. Having said that I still find it quite hilarious that whenever Pluto passes over Illinois it goes from a part of the Kuiper Belt into a full fledged planet. They should’ve also changed its name from Pluto to Schizophrenia.

After the Mojave campaign that sought to bring people to notice Vista again, Microsoft is now enlisting Jerry Seinfeld to help in its $300 million ad campaign. The celebrated comedian will be paid $10 million to endorse Vista.

The question is, will the guys at Redmond be able to come up with a deceptively simple, but widely effective ad campaign as the Cupertino guys’ (you know who they are) “Get a Mac” campaign.

Justin Long vs Seinfeld. This could be a one hell of a fight.

One of the most frequent uses we have for our laptops is sending and receiving emails. I still remember the first time I got my own email address (about ten years ago). I was obsessively checking my inbox for any kind of mail — even spam! There was even a forwarded email circulating about how to tell if you are an email junkie. Of course, that was still during the infancy of commercial email, when everyone looked at it as this shiny, new-fangled toy.

Jump a few years back to the present and email has lost its “new toy” sheen. People have now seen its blemishes and ugly spots. First, there is spam, then the proliferation of hoax and scam emails, and of course, there are the trojan and virus infested emails that wreak havoc on your computer.

Harris Interactive recently conducted a survey on the biggest pet peeves that happen in the workplace and, surprisingly, it discovered that the abuse and misuse of emails has now emerged as one of the biggest annoyances at work. According to respondents, they are irritated when officemates use the “reply all” function on emails without thinking. This practice floods inboxes with emails that are not important to people not involved in the communication or the project. Another pet peeve is the use and misuse of blind carbon copies (BCC).

Even though email abuse has risen on the list though, the biggest pet peeve is still gossip in the work environment, with 60 per cent of respondents listing it at the top of their list.

Well, include gossiping via email as an emerging pet peeve in the years to come.

I’ve contended time and time again that present laws on copyright are outdated and should be changed or revamped in order to more accurately reflect the change in paradigms in terms of intellectual property. The old fogeys at the RIAA and its film counterpart are just being stubborn for trying to go after the fans themselves. It’s a very shortsighted solution in a battle in which they will just lose anyway. We need newer and better alternatives.

The decision of Walgreens to setup kiosks that will allow consumers to make legitimate copies of DVDs through a system that is also designed to discourage piracy is a welcome one, in my opinion.

Changes in how copy protection laws impact on DVDs have made this “experiment” viable and is encouraging not only Walgreens but also other retailers as well to allow consumers to make copies of DVDs in their stores.

This is a win-win situation for both consumers and for movie studios. Burning copies means cheaper costs, while studios also get a cut of the revenues generated for the services — and they don’t even have to spend on manufacturing and shipping costs.

The idea is already generating a lot of buzz and many people are hoping that this is going to become a success. I hope that this is going to become an important step towards the right direction.

I’ve been blogging about some pretty serious stuff for the last few months. Time to have some fun, don’t you think?

Have you guys seen the Chris Crocker video on Youtube? It’s basically about this weird guy who’s bawling his eyes out trying to defend Britney Spears from detractors and critics. Crocker, who calls himself the Queen of Ghetto, shows what a rabid fan is willing to do in defense of their favorite — either that or he’s really desperate to get that fifteen minutes of fame. And you know what? In the crazy world of showbusiness, he did get his fifteen minutes. He has appeared in Jimmy Kimmel Live and more recently it was announced that a production company has signed Crocker to do a reality TV show –all on the strength of his kohl-lined eyes, his frosted highlights and his hysterics.

Watch the Crocker video below:

One of the raison d’etres of having a laptop is taking advantage of WiFi and the ability to surf the internet wherever you are. For me, mobile surfing is one of the greatest technological leaps that we have made because it has really made information accessible to anyone, anywhere, anytime.

Of course, WiFi still costs money to operate. Yes, there are free WiFi hotzones but that doesn’t mean the operators of the network are not expending money to give you the privilege to look at the latest football scores over your macchiatto. They shoulder not only the WiFi subscription but also the accompanying costs of operating WiFi devices — electricity being a big factor to the overall expense.

Solis Energy claims to have the solution though. The Orlando-based company said that it can employ solar energy to power low wattage devices like WiFi routers, security cameras — even traffic lights and sensors. This is the kind of innovation that is really welcome in our time when global warming really poses a serious threat worldwide. An alternative source of energy that is one hundred per cent green and renewable is the way to go. Al Gore should have reason to smile when he reads about Solis.

I recently visited the buy and sell section of one of my favorite online forums. I periodically do this because I have discovered that some really great bargains could be had from the buy and sell section. I was doing the virtual equivalent of window shopping when I chanced upon an ad posted by one of the forum members. This guy was selling his old iMac G4 20″ desktop PC for about $1,199. I couldn’t believe my eyes! The ad further explained that the G4 had been used for a fe w years and that he initially bought the iMac for $2,800.

If you look at the numbers you’d think that you’re getting a real bargain. The guy must be crazy if he’s selling it at that low price! The seller may think that he’s offering a great bargain price, but in reality, he’s ripping off any prospective buyers. Here is where the iniquity of depreciation kicks in. A cursory look in eBay and you will discover that the highest bid for a used but good condition iMac G4 is $200. Yes, a measly 200 bucks. And to put it in a better perspective, the newly released iMac Aluminum, that marvel of desktop architecture, has a base price of, hold on, $1,199. That’s the price being offered by the seller in that buy and sell section!

Depreciation really sucks especially when it involves items that you paid so much money for. The seller may not have any intention of tricking hapless buyers and only wants to recoup some of his investment on a PC. But the sad reality is, the moment you buy a computer, whether it’s a desktop PC or a laptop, it is already obsolete and have devalued in price.

If you have any intention of recouping your investment in computers. Follow this simple advice: Sell it off after two years. Even then, the most that you can get is maybe half of what you paid for it.

I’ve always been fascinated with modifications made on desktops and laptops. I’ve seen features on how to modify desktops and the inherent benefits of making these changes. I got so intrigued that I actually modded the case of my first PC. I think I was one of the first people to do it where I live because when I brought my PC for repairs all of the technicians and customers milled around my PC, asking questions about the simple intake vent that I painstakingly cut from the side panel of the case.

Now, PC mods are quite common. Vents would never even get a second glance from people because PC case manufacturers now incorporate these on cases. What is making people take notice though are modifications made on laptops.

People who modify laptops are a different breed altogether. These are people with nerves of carbon fiber and balls of steel. Why? It takes a man of courage to actually open a very expensive piece of electronics and then tinker and change something that was not even specified by the manufacturer.

Take this guy, for example. He modified his Apple laptop so that the Apple logo would glow. The modification was a success and the result was quite impressive.

I’m now looking at my trusty Acer notebook in a whole new perspective.

I love music, there is no doubt about that. I’m like a junkie looking for a constant fix of new music and new music genres that I can sink my teeth into. I’ve already built a very respectable CD collection and an ever growing digital music library that is currently about to hit the terabyte level. Unfortunately, because digital music is so much easier to handle, I have not used my CDs that much, in fact, I have not even transferred any of it into a digital audio format and, therefore, have not been able to load my favorite CDs on my iPod.

I have decided that ripping my CDs will be my pet project for the month. I’ve already set up my computer for maximum efficiency in ripping by downloading Exact Audio Copy (EAC) – the digital music connoisseur’s choice for best CD ripper. The funny thing about EAC though is that it has built a reputation for being the best ripper on earth because it is so damn complicated to use. There are just so many tweaks and settings you need to fiddle with in order to get the maximum efficiency for the rip. I bet the casual music fan won’t even be bothered to open the options menu of a strange piece of software when they can just use Microsoft’s built in Windows Media Player to rip their CD of Celine Dion or Beyonce Knowles. But I tell you the difference of the rips from WMP and from EAC are night and day (it’s like comparing Celine to, say, Martha Wainwright or Joanna Newsom). It really is worth the hassle and cursing because EAC’s output has top notch detail and clarity. No muddy quality for this baby. From here on out, I’m EAC’s man all the way.
